Multispecies piano is an old piano - no longer up to our musical standards - transformed into a basis of new life: as nutrition and habitat for various organisms. Through a number of modifications, including the removal of harmful materials and the addition of specific plant species and nesting materials, an interplay is created between the dead material of the piano and the living micro-organisms, plants and animals that use it and become part of it.

The piano was exhibited at the Fashion Tech Farm during Dutch Design Week, from October 21 to October 29 under curation by @torenvanbabel

Day 0 Transport - with the great help from my fami

Day 0
Transport - with the great help from my family - and assembly of Multispecies piano @fashiontechfarm. This included adding the hedgehog shelter, bumblebee hive, creating the loam and wood insect shelters and placing the organically grown plants 🌱( from @sprinklr.co), specifically selected to provide food and shelter for as many species as possible throughout the seasons. Day -21 The process of making Multispecies Piano s

Day -21
The process of making Multispecies Piano started about a month before Dutch Design Week (and 21 days before placing it at the exhibition location @fashiontechfarm). I spent most of this time working to remove harmful components, i.e. the paint, the plastics, the strings, and the inner workings of the piano. Thankfully, my dad really did the bulk of the deconstruction of the iron frame. I felt the piano needed to make music one last time before its transformation however, so I asked my sister to play and recorded a short video.
